Program note for String Trio
The String Trio (1966) is perhaps the first work that clearly projects my individual creative voice. Premiered at Tanglewood in 1966, it is in one movement lasting about 14 minutes, divided into three sections without pause. It was composed under the spell of Schoenberg’s String Trio, from which it takes not only a variety of string techniques but also something of its psychological character. My piece, however, is not 12-tone but freely hexachordal.
